BASICALLY: A mash-up of Russian arthouse and 80s rock. In 1989 German film director Peter Fleischmann adapted the classic Russian science fiction novel ‘Hard to be a God’.
A co-production with Russia, the film was very much a product of its time and the end credits scrolled to this amazing power ballad, sung – in English – by Australian vocalist Grant Stevens.
Russian director Aleksei German (confused yet?) took 15 years to make his own adaptation of ‘Hard to be a God’ – a critically-acclaimed, black-and-white arthouse epic running almost three hours long … and featuring amongst other things a high-definition vision of human misery, brutality, ignorance, blood, mud and excrement. Enjoy.
